This is a bitter-sweet tale of Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey) who led a rebellion and established an area free from Confederate or Union control. The tale follows through the reconstruction period as defeated Confederates return to make lives miserable for those recently liberated. At over two hours, the film felt rushed, or pushed at the end, while they seemed to have spent too much time in the beginning. Great acting. There is some small juxtaposition to the 1940's (?) when an ancestor is challenged in court.Good acting. Good drama. Class warfare message.Guide: No searing sex or nudity. Some intense scenes.

FREE STATE OF JONES (2016) ***1/2 Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali, Keri Russell, Christopher Berry, Sean Bridgers, Jacob Lofland, Thomas Francis Murphy, Bill Tangradi, Brian Lee Franklin. Well-acted historical account of true life events during and after the Civil War in Mississippi with veteran nurse-in-the-field commoner Newton Knight (a never better McConaughey) who weighs the options against all odds by rebelling against the ongoing violent conflagration enlisting black slaves and white colleagues in arms with everything to lose. Heartfelt, subtly poignant and rage embroiling injustices are well handled by director Gary Ross who adapted the screenplay based on Leonard Hartman's story. Fine acting across the board makes a compelling drama with clear-eyed determination and grit.

A nice piece of American History and probably the best role of the great actor Matthew Mcconaughey. The Casting is also very good, Specially Gugu Mbatha-Raw or Mahershala Ali (seen in "Hunger Games" or "Predators" in 2010).Even if some images are really violent, the film keeps a lot of beauty and show the real courage of the mens who decide to fight for the right things.Don't miss this film under any circumstances!Much more interesting than the movie "Lincoln" signed by Steven Spielberg and more instructive than " 12 years a slave " of the director Steve McQueen.
